What can the World Cup teach us about Team Culture?

Aug 11, 2023

One of my favourite things about the World Cup games is the moment the teams come out of the tunnel, line up and sing the National Anthem. Goosebumps, every single time. You can tell a lot about the team and their supporters from that moment.

Have you noticed the absolute magic of team Colombia and its fans? Next level! Just watch this:

That’s something else, isn’t it?

If you’ve ever been to a stadium, you know what it feels like to watch your favourite team or player score. It’s impossible to remain unmoved. Because of this physical experience (tears, heightened joy, goosebumps, excitement), those memories are anchored in our bodies and create lasting bonds with the people we share them with.

That experience is called ‘collective effervescence’; the feeling of energy and harmony when people are engaged in a shared purpose.

Any good facilitator knows that in those moments people experience a sense of endless possibility and pure magic is created.

So, when designing a meaningful team activity, that’s what to aim for.

You can bring together the best technical talent and still not have a winning team. What creates the winning team is the spirit, the numinous threads that connect the team members.

At Wondr we’re a team of passionate facilitators and cultivators that create out-of-the-box experiences for teams and organisations that are serious about creating world-class Culture.

We design and deliver anything from online power-hours to day-long immersions and unique onboarding experiences.
